Ardfert Town | St.Brendans Cathedral | Franciscan Friary | Wethers Well | Casements Fort

This is one of Ardfert’s most hallowed sites. In the past, great gatherings were held there to commemorate the patriot Casement. It was in this fort that he hid, while his comrades went in search of help.

It is signposted on the road to Rathoneen, a few short miles from Ardfert. Originally named McKenna’s Fort, it is now named in memory of this famous Irishman Rodger Casement. As the old Kerry ballad was sung:

Now the R.I.C. were hunting for Sir Rodger high and low,
They found him at McKenna’s Fort, said they ‘’you are our foe’’
Said he ‘’I’m Rodger Casement I’ve come to my native land.
For I mean to free my country men on the lonely Banna Strand.’’
