(Stone Altar at Tobar na Molt)

Tradition tells us that it was here St Brendan was christened. A legend exists that at the birth of the saint, three wethers or sheep sprang from this place, hence Wether’s Well or in Irish ‘’ Tobar na Molt.’’

A 16th century map of the Desmond lands in Kerry includeded ‘’ Tiobooranamoult.’’ It was an important place of pilgrimage in the past. Thousands flocked here in earlier centuries.

De Latocnaye, an observant Frenchman, who travelled around Ireland in c.1796-7, visited the holy well and remarked:
"At a little distance there is to be found one of those holy wells round
which inhabitants perform their devotions. This well is very famous and the people come from afar."

It is still visited today, where on the Feast day of St Brendan on May 16th, mass is celebrated. It remains a quiet, restful, prayerful, place today and is another heritage location in Ardfert that is worth a visit.
